Visual Salience and Perceptual Grouping in Multimodal Interactivity

چکیده
1 Abstract This paper deals with the pragmatic interpretation of multimodal referring expressions in man -machine dialogue systems. We show the importance of building up a structure of the visual context at a semantic level, in order to enrich the significant possibilities of in terpretations and to make possible the fusion of this structure with the ones obtained from the linguistic and gesture semantic analyses. Visual salience and perceptual grouping are two notions that guide such a structuring. We thus propose a hierarchy of salience criteria linked to an algorithm that detects salient objects, as well as guidelines for grouping algorithms. We show how the integration of the results of all these algorithms is a complex problem. We propose simple heuristics to reduce this compl exity and we conclude on the usability of such heuristics in actual systems.

Thematic Relevance and Perceptual Salience of Dynamic Geovisualization Displays
We propose a research agenda for empirically assessing the effectiveness of dynamic displays with the eye-movement data collection method. The proposed framework is based on the relationship between perceptual salience and thematic relevance in static (e.g., visual variables: color hue, color value and orientation) and animated displays (e.g., dynamic variables including transitions). The propo...
متن کاملA Social Semiotic Analysis of Social Actors in English-Learning Software Applications
This study drew upon Kress and Van Leeuwen’s (2006, [1996]) visual grammar and Van Leeuwen’s (2008) social semiotic model to interrogate ways through which social actors of different races are visually and textually represented in four award-winning English-learning software packages. The analysis was based on narrative actional/reactional processes at the ideational level; mood, perspective, ...
متن کاملCortical Synchronization Mechanism for “Pop-Out” of Salient Image Contours
We present a model based on long-range intra-cortical connections which computes the salience of contours in a visual scene. The model accounts for a number of psychophysical and physiological results on contour salience, and provides a mechanism for several of the Gestalt laws of perceptual organization. In the model, cells lying on smooth contours facilitate each other, and strongly facilitat...
متن کاملSalient collinear grouping diminishes local salience in visual search: an eye movement study.
Our eyes and attention are easily attracted to salient items in search displays. When a target is spatially overlapped with a salient distractor (overlapping target), it is usually detected more easily than when it is not (nonoverlapping target). Jingling and Tseng (2013), however, found that a salient distractor impaired visual search when the distractor was comprised of more than nine bars co...
متن کاملCortical Surround Interactions and Perceptual Salience via Natural Scene Statistics
Spatial context in images induces perceptual phenomena associated with salience and modulates the responses of neurons in primary visual cortex (V1). However, the computational and ecological principles underlying contextual effects are incompletely understood. We introduce a model of natural images that includes grouping and segmentation of neighboring features based on their joint statistics,...
